I spent 22 days on a Holland America cruise and saw places like Antarctica and Chile. The cruise cost me $144 a day, and is one of the more cost-effective ways to see Antarctica. I went with family members and we paid $3,175 a person, which is about $144 a day. Erin YarnallI never thought any sort of trip to Antarctica would be in my budget, let alone a cruise. Once on board, though, I was very impressed with the ship's fitness center.

On Thanksgiving, the Houston restaurateur Sylvia Casares serves at least three dozen for dessert at her family celebrations. The recipe is from her grandmother Sarita Casares, who was born and raised in the late 1800s in the border town Reynosa, Mexico. Ms. Casares has tweaked the formula, sprinkling cinnamon sugar on top to give the empanadas a sheen. “During Thanksgiving, I’ll have a pumpkin pie, but the empanadas are definitely the star of the show,” said Ms. Casares, the author of “The Enchilada Queen Cookbook: Enchiladas, Fajitas, Tamales, and More Classic Recipes from Texas-Mexico Border Kitchens.”Empanadas have been around since at least 250 B.C. They made their way to Spain, and followed the Spaniards to Latin America, said Sandra Gutierrez, the author of several cookbooks including “Empanadas: The Hand-Held Pies of Latin America.”

When I was a kid, my family moved from a predominantly Mexican American border community in San Diego to a sleepy beach town 20 miles up the coast. Surrounded by the dominant culture for the first time, I found myself gravitating toward the “American” part of my Mexican American identity. Her quiet presence was a constant in our lives, and though she may not have fit the version of the American Dream most books and movies peddled back in those days, she was our North Star. Thankfully, the American Dream we see in pop culture today is more expansive. In the opening pages of “Mexikid,” Martín riffs on his first name: “They call me Peter … but my real name is Pedro.

It does the same for cannibalism, though there was nothing like that on the schedule as far as I knew. But we had all day to talk about eating people. First, empanadas. I drooled a little watching Machado and Mark take bites of the face-sized empanadas, which were perfectly golden brown, bubbly in the right spots and oozy, not greasy. They were tasty, Machado said, but she was partial to the chicken-and-cheese pastelillos, fried turnovers similar to empanadas, that her Puerto Rican mother used to make.

The shops, called Market by Macy's and Bloomie's, are about one-fifth of the size of the retailer's typical Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores. It has not announced the locations of the four Market by Macy's stores, but said the additional Bloomie's store will be in Seattle. By opening the strip-mall shops, the retailer could steal business away from its larger namesake mall stores.
